The exterior of the house is covered with shingles on the upper portion, clapboards on the lower portion, and patterned slate on the roof. The interior has fine, richly molded woodwork upstairs and down, created by Victorian craftsmen led by world-famous architect Mr. Karl Bitter, who duplicated many of the designs at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, including the beautiful coffered ceiling in the Library. The 10 fireplaces are all tiled and there is a three-way fireplace openinginto the foyer, library, and dining room.

Dr. Benjamin graduated from medical school at the University of Kansas and completed his residency at Wright State University/Wright Patterson Air Force Base while on a prestigious U.S. Dr. Benjamin served a total of 21 years (8 years active, 13 years in reserves) as an Air Force psychiatrist, during which time he served as both the medical and administrative director for the Tinker Air Force Base Substance Abuse Program.
Prior to completing medical school, Dr. Benjamin graduated as valedictorian with a B.S. In journalism from the respected William Allen White School of Journalism at the University of Kansas. His track and field and cross country coaching experiences at KU and OSU helped shape his philosophy of seeing each patient as an “athlete,” with the goal of helping maximize their potential as part of a multidisciplinary team. He utilizes this concept when working with every patient at Rise in Malibu. Dr. Benjamin is also a certified IGMCA Mental Game Instructor and Life Coach.
Dr. Heller, founded the NeuroAffective Relational Model© (NARM), a specialized psychobiological approach to working with developmental trauma. He holds a Ph.D in psychology and was in private practice for 30 years. Dr. Benjamin is the gold standard of psychiatry at the world's most prestigious luxury rehabs. With his origins in treating addiction for the United States Air Force (retire Lt. Colonel), he's assisted thousands of patients recover from drug and alcohol dependency. The Liddell-McNinch House is of the authentic Queen Anne/Shingle style. Participants of the Fourth Ward Preliminary Survey, sponsored by the Mecklenburg County Landmarks Commission in March 1975, felt that it was possibly the finest representative of that style in North Carolina.
The low rating is solely based on the preparation of the entrees. We asked for the temperature of the steak to be what the chef recommends and were told it would be medium rare. The lamb entree was cooked perfectly but the coating was a bit underwhelming. We can only recommend 3 (crab cake, she crab soup, lobster bisque) of the 4 (artichoke salad) starters we had, and they were tremendous. The desserts were good, nothing to complain about, but nothing to rave about.We did mention to Wes towards the end of service that the steak was overdone, but we never send plates back to the kitchen.This is a special occasion type of place and you will remember the experience. Unfortunately, for us, the entrees did not live up to the price point.
